The instinct is to take the biggest percentage. That is usually the wrong call, because the deepest discount sits on the plan with the harshest renewal.

- Year two onward is full price. The discount is a first-term promotion. Nothing carries over.

- The 30-day money-back guarantee usually excludes domain fees. That is industry standard rather than a hosting.com quirk, but check it before relying on the guarantee.
- Monthly billing forfeits the offer. These prices require a 12-month term. Pay monthly and you are much closer to list price.
Is this a genuine discount or a fake one?
A fair question, because inflated “was” prices are common in hosting.
In hosting.com’s case the list prices are the prices you actually renew at. Starter is advertised as reduced from $11.99, and it does in fact renew at $11.99 a month. That makes the discount real in the only sense that matters: the crossed-out number is a price someone genuinely pays, namely you, in year two.
Where we would push back is on presentation rather than honesty. “75% off” is a much larger number than “free for the first year, then $143.88 annually”, and it is the first framing that gets the prominent placement. But the renewal figure is printed on the card, and plenty of competitors do not do that at all.
How to judge any hosting deal
A checklist that works on every provider, not just this one:
- Find the renewal price before you find the discount. If it is not published, ask support and get it in writing. A host that will not tell you is telling you something.
- Check the term required. Some hosts show enormous discounts that require a four-year prepayment. A 12-month term at a slightly worse rate is often the better deal.
