The short answer
A VPS is a physical server divided into isolated virtual machines, each with its own operating system and a fixed allocation of CPU, RAM and disk. You get dedicated resources and root access without paying for a whole machine. Most sites should move to a VPS when shared hosting stops coping with traffic, or when they need to install software shared hosting will not allow.
The honest version: most small sites never need one. If your site loads fine and you are not fighting resource limits, a VPS is an expense without a benefit.
What a VPS actually is
On shared hosting, your site sits alongside other customers on one machine, drawing from a common pool of resources. On a VPS, that same physical machine is partitioned into separate virtual servers. Each one runs its own operating system and holds a fixed slice of the hardware that other customers cannot touch.
The practical differences that matter:
- Dedicated resources. Your allocated CPU and RAM are yours whether you use them or not. A traffic spike on someone else’s site is no longer your problem.
- Root access. You can install software, change server configuration and run services that shared hosting blocks.
- Predictable cost. Unlike usage-billed cloud, a VPS is a fixed monthly figure.
- A hard ceiling. Dedicated resources also means finite resources. Exceed them and the answer is an upgrade, not elastic scaling.
Managed or unmanaged: the decision that matters most
This choice affects your workload far more than which provider you pick.

Choose unmanaged only if you can confidently patch a server, configure a firewall and restore from backup under pressure. An unpatched unmanaged VPS is considerably less safe than the shared hosting you left. The saving is real, but so is the responsibility.
When you should actually move to a VPS
Genuine reasons:
- You are hitting resource limits. Your host has warned you about CPU or memory use, or your site slows under traffic that used to be fine.
- You need software shared hosting will not run. A specific database, a background worker, a custom service.
- You need root access for configuration you cannot do inside cPanel.
- Isolation is a security requirement, for example for a site handling payments or sensitive data.
- You run several client sites and want resources that do not compete.
Bad reasons, and they are common:
- “VPS is faster.” Not inherently. A badly optimised site on a VPS is still a badly optimised site. Caching, image sizes and a bloated plugin stack cause far more slowness than shared hosting does.
- “It sounds more professional.” Your visitors cannot tell.
- “I might need it later.” Upgrade when you need it. Most hosts move you with no downtime.
What to look for when comparing VPS plans
- The renewal price, before the intro price. VPS discounts follow the same pattern as shared hosting: cheap first term, considerably more afterwards. Work out three years.
- Whether root access is included. Some managed plans restrict it, which defeats a common reason for upgrading.
- Storage type. NVMe over SATA SSD, and SSD over spinning disk, for anything database-driven.
- Backups: included, or extra? And can you restore yourself without opening a ticket?
- How upgrades work. Can you add RAM without a migration and without downtime?
- Whether a control panel licence is included. cPanel licences cost real money if you have to buy one separately.
- Data centre location. Physical distance to your audience affects response time more than most on-server tuning.

Since we review hosting.com in depth, here is where their VPS offering sits. These are their published claims rather than our own measurements, and we have not independently benchmarked their VPS platform.
They sell both managed and unmanaged tiers. Managed includes cPanel, a pre-installed CloudLinux operating system, automated backups and managed security, with daily rebootless OS updates. Unmanaged gives you a choice of Linux distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian) and full responsibility for updates and backups. Both include root access.
Across the range they list SSD storage, NVMe and LiteSpeed on their Turbo tiers, a free CDN, free SSL, Anycast DNS, free account migration, a 99.9% uptime commitment and 24/7 in-house support. They also state that promotional VPS pricing applies to a 12-month term and renews at the regular rate afterwards, which is at least disclosed rather than buried.
One claim worth treating carefully: hosting.com advertises VPS “up to 20x faster than others”. Comparative speed claims of that kind are almost never accompanied by a published methodology, and this one is not. Treat it as marketing.
